On Thursday, March 25th, 2010 Voorheesville High School will be having their first Wellness Festival, that is celebrating good health and exercise for the students and faculty. The day will consist of various workshops, different speakers, and activities to help promote a healthy lifestyle. Students in the beginning of the school year were able to choose from a list of various workshops that they would like to have included on the day of the Wellness Festival. Students then got to choose their top five choices, and from those choices will be receiving a schedule that consists of those choices. There is a wide range of workshops ranging from healthy cooking, to cave exploring (called spelunking), or even self defense.
The Wellness Festival is very beneficial because it will teach people to maintain health and fitness. A healthy life requires periodic physical activity. To prevent heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and obesity, the American Heart Association recommends 30-60 minutes of exercise at least four times a week, but sometimes it’s really hard trying to find the time to work out, and to stay healthy between school, work, family and other activities, your plans to try and stay as healthy as possible probably don’t work out as often as they should. There are many benefits to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as lowering your body weight and fat and decreasing risk of disease, it also helps the body and mind by helping people keep a more positive attitude and good self esteem along with more energy and much better sleep. It can also help to reduce the risk of injury, especially any kind of lower back strain. Some injuries require a lot of rest, but for example lower back pain can get better if you stay more active. Exercise will help reduce any lower back pain and help you recover faster and prevent from re-injury.
The workshops that the school is presenting are trying to teach students ways that they can incorporate these things into their daily routines to improve their lifestyles overall. Exercising regularly to improve overall health and eating healthy will help to maintain a healthy mind and body.
