Many students, parents and teachers think that schools can not look at their Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter pages, but this is not true. These three websites are social networks. Anyone can make a page and if you do not set your settings properly anyone can look at them. If you don’t set your settings on private then any one on the social network can see your page.
There has been a dilemma lately that many students are upset about. Some of the people who wanted a lacrosse team at Voorheesville this year are joining a Facebook group entitled “Voorheesville Sucks.” They are getting many people to join this group, but in turn some coaches are saying that if a student is part of this group they can not do certain sports. Mr. Corrigan, the associate principal of Clayton A. Bouton High School, says that he is aware of the group on Facebook but he thinks that the students are bringing negative attention to themselves. Mr. Corrigan says that this is not the correct way to get the attention they are seeking. Administrators are not allowed to take away sports because of membership in a Facebook group, but if a student or teacher feels threatened by a comment then they will intervene and try to solve the problems being made.
The school board understands that some students wanted a school lacrosse team, but the way they are expressing their anger at not getting a team is not effective. The board wishes that the students would go about expressing their opinions in a different way. That way the school board next year will have an open mind about it. Groups saying that students hate their school is not going to make the board happy, and students next year may have a better chance if they go about this a different way.
