Commons Repainted to Periwinkle and Easter Egg Yellow

Many of you are familiar with the change in the color of the Commons last year from a dark purple to “Periwinkle-ish and easter egg yellow,” according to Katherine Petit, a junior attending Voorheesville high school. Psychologically, purple is a relaxing color, which would be more fitting for the Commons than a dull yellow and a blue-purple. While periwinkle is similar to dark purple in its psychological effects, it has also been found to be less pleasing to the eye, especially in the case of men because it is regarded as a very feminine color.

The primary issue is not the change to periwinkle but rather the dull yellow that is present above it. Dull yellows such as “easter egg yellow” can evoke feelings of fear, annoyance, and anger. A color that can cause such negative emotions does not belong in such an academic and social environment. If we were to change the shade of yellow it would create more positive feelings of optimism and joy which are much more acceptable for a school environment.

Some may argue that these colors are used because they closely resemble our school colors and changing them would show a lack of school spirit. Personally, I would not be opposed to changing the color to a more neutral and friendly color such as green; it is understandable that a majority of the students and staff would prefer to use the schools colors of purple and gold. I am simply suggesting that using different shades of the school colors would be a much better choice than the colors currently being used in the Commons to make them more aesthetically pleasing.
