Speaking with a few of the starting Voorheesville Blackbird basketball players on the afternoon before their senior game on February 9th, it was evident that they were going into it with confidence. Conor Cashin, point guard, said “Ravena did just beat Lansingburgh so we can’t overlook them,” but he also added “We should blow them out.” The starting lineup, a little different than usual because starter Nick Crawford’s disciplinary issue, was Conor Cashin, Ethan Mackey, John Alawi, Chris Castren and Josh Meilak.
The start of the game was played really well, with senior Ethan Mackey getting the ball for the Birds at the jump ball. The Birds knew that Ravena did just beat Lansingburgh, so they were determined not to lose their Senior Game. Voorheesville was ahead of Ravena by 14 by the end of the first quarter. Andrew Brozowski is usually one of Ravena’s better players. Conor Cashin said, “He shoots the ball a lot and can also take it to the rack,” but last night he couldn’t sink a shot. Instead, Kenny Fuqua had the most points for Ravena with five three-point shots.
At the end of the game the final score was Voorheesville Blackbirds 66, Ravena Indians 37. Although the game looked to be a good game, Cashin’s prediction was right. When asked about sectionals, senior forward Chris Castren’s face lit up. He said, “We’re already one step closer to maintain the league”. The chance of them winning sectionals is pretty high. The Birds have a high seed and they are a really well put together team. The competition they have to look out for are Hoosic Falls and Maple Hill, both outstanding teams, but the Birds should be able to take the title.
