There is no mystery behind the Voorheesville Blackbird varsity basketball team’s successes; it’s certainly evident that it lies in the skills of their all-star line up.  One player  making quite a bit of buzz around the capital region high school sports scene is none other than our Ethan Mackey.  Ethan has made it into the Times Union four times and made a great name for himself for being one of the most talented players and the Class C bracket. It is quite impressive what Ethan has done in the three years he has been on the varsity team.  When Ethan takes the court he dominates the offense with an average close to twenty points a game, nearly two blocks, and close to ten rebounds.  While all of this is impressive, it doesn’t come close to the fact that in an average game nearly half of the Birds’ shots are taken by Ethan, a truly amazing feat for only one player.

Ethan demonstrated his skills again on the February 9th when the Blackbirds beat Ravena for another impressive victorious home game. The game ended with a 66-37 Blackbirds’ victory. Ethan exceeded his average score of twenty points a game by scoring twenty-seven of the blackbirds sixty six points on his own. Ethan commented that he was particularly proud of his team’s display this game and thought that their offense was particularly good this game. “Our team plays really well together, we rebounded well.” Ethan also stated that there are some things that the Blackbirds can improve on, “We need to improve our defense amongst other things to get better so we can win sectionals.” Ethan hopes that if the Blackbirds can improve their defense in time for sectionals they will come out somewhere in the top three seeds. Ethan was also very pleased with the crowd’s reaction at the game on the 9th, saying that “the crowd was going crazy and the atmosphere was electric.”

When asked what he thought of his own performance in the game and what he thought about his own playing from when he started three years ago and what he needs to improve about his own game, Ethan said the following: What Ethan is most proud of is his offensive playing. Ethan says that he is glad that he has been able to improve his handling of the basketball and his rebounds. What he is most proud of is his shots on basket and his twenty score average per game. One thing that he thinks he needs to improve on is going to the basket with his right hand so he can perform his counter move by switching hands. Hopefully Ethan can lead the Blackbirds to one of sectional’s top three slots.
