The Voorheesville Varsity Boys Volleyball team ended their season on Tuesday, March 2 with a 75-43 loss to Maple Hill in their semi-finals sectional match. Despite this surprising loss, the team had a very successful season. Coach Thomas Kurkjian is very happy with the results of the season. “The Colonial Council League which we were placed years ago had five teams this year. Voorheesville won for the third year in a row as champion with an 11-1 record. Our sole loss came at the hands of a 10-2 team that beat us without two of our important starters; their two losses were comfortable wins by Voorheesville. I’m happy with the results of this season given we didn’t have enough returnees to field a team!”
Mr. Kurkjian has been coaching Volleyball for 27 years. He first coached from 1972-1990 and then returned in 2001 and has been coaching ever since. This 2010 season was his last year of coaching. The highlight of this season for Mr. Kurkjian was winning the third title. Throughout his years of coaching at Voorheesville, the Blackbirds have always had a high level of success. From seasons 2003-2006, the Blackbirds only lost one game. The next two seasons the Blackbirds were undefeated all the way through regionals. Many players and fans expected the Blackbirds to continue their success this year, and were surprised by their sectional loss. Despite this unfortunate loss, the team still had much success and should be proud of their efforts. Senior Michel Brennan reflects on his final season as a Voorheesville Blackbird:
“I think the season went well, we had a slow start with almost an entirely fresh set of kids. Most hadn’t played volleyball before beyond gym class. I think we grew as a team over time and we came a long way from where we originally started, as far as skill-level is concerned. We lost our semi-finals sectional match last night to Maple Hill. We all played a little ‘off’ from our normal game, but Maple Hill definitely outplayed us.” Next year will continue to be a struggle to find new players for the Blackbirds Volleyball team because they are losing eight seniors this year. These seniors include Stephen Barron, Michael Brennan, Marty Hesselbacher, Eric Meyer, Patrick Soleviev, Robert Stefan, Elliot Stryker, and Garrett Wineinger. With this many players gone next year, the team will once again have to find new players to form a team, and that will be up to a new coach. Mr. Kurkjian ends with his hopes for next year’s team:
“I’d like to thank the school and community for allowing me the opportunity to coach volleyball all these years. Finally, thanks to Will Witty for joining us this season. I’ve always hoped to meet a future coach taking my place. I’d love to see Mr. Witty continue on with this wonderful program.”
