The Voorheesville Middle School and High School Library is currently challenging all students to warm up during the month of February by reading 400 books over the course of four weeks.  The mid-winter reading challenge, called “Warm Winter Reads,” will begin Monday, February 1st, and continue through to Friday, February 26th.  In order to participate in the challenge, middle school and high school students must register beginning on February 1st, and submit recommendations for the books they wish to complete.  Reading recommendations, in the form of a book spine, can be found on a bookshelf display located in the library.  The recommendations can be rated using a star system to rate the books quality.  A top rated book would get a rating of 3 stars, and one not rated as highly would get 1 or 2 stars.

Students can watch the amount of how many books have been read by looking at the giant “Read-o-meter”.  The Read-o-meter is a picture of a huge stack of books in the library.  It will be updated weekly with the total number of books read to date.  To help keep the challenge alive for the entire month, students will be able to choose a small gift item for each book they complete. In addition for every book you read, you get to put your name and grade on a piece of paper and enter it into a container. This is for a weekly drawing to win a ten dollar gift certificate to the book fair. Every book you read furthers your possibilities of winning in the drawing.  6th grader Michael Stafford was the first to win the prize of a $10 gift certificate for the book fair.  Way to go Michael!

To celebrate students’ achievements, the library is planning to hold a reception on March 2nd, which coincides with the National Education Association’s “Read across America” event. This date is also the birthday of children’s book author Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss.

To date 62 readers have read 56 books totaling about 16,000 pages.  We still have 344 more books to read in order to reach our goal of 400 books in 4 weeks. The 62 readers are from the grade levels as follows:

Grade # of Books Pages

6th grade: 26 people have read 7,300 book pages

7th grade: 18 people have read 3,800 pages

8th grade: 7 people have read 2,500 pages

9-12th grade: 11 people have read 2, 400 pages

Total: 62 people have read 16,000 pages
