Wrestling Season Comes to an End

The Voorheesville boys wrestling team participated in the Class C finals Saturday, February 6th in Granville.  Going into the tournament, team member Darren Staples was confident about his teammates’ individual wins.  Throughout the season the team was winning on the mat, but struggled in overall score finishing 10-15.  The Class C tournament scores the players not the team, so Staples believed that his teammates were going to do well in the double elimination tournament.  Voorheesville came home at the conclusion of a long day with great success.

Heading into Granville Saturday, senior captain, Taylor Treadgold was seeded number one in the 125 weight class and he proved his rankings to be true placing first place this Saturday.  His younger brother, Quinn, also placed first in the weight class above him. Quinn had the number two seeding for his weight class, however beat out the number one seed.  A new edition to the team this year was sophomore Caleb Cummings, who did not hold a top four seeding in Class C, but the new and growing wrestler showed how far he has come since the beginning of the season by grasping third place this weekend.

Up in the heavier weight classes, the other senior captain, Jimmy Sheedy, was ranked in at number two for the 171 weight class and held his ranking at second place at the end of the day. Don Case held the fourth seeding for 285 but won third place in the competition.  Dylan Foster had a number three seeding for 145, but could not wrestle due to injury.

Staples’ biggest concern was for brothers Taylor and Quinn Treadgold.  Although they are leaders in their weight class, the 125 and 130 weight class holds a lot of tough competition that the boys did not take for granted.  At the end of the day, the brothers were still the top dogs.  These five Voorheesville wrestlers are now preparing for Sectional finals on Friday and Saturday February 12th and 13th at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Junior wrestler, Brian Katchmen came in fifth place so he won’t be going to Sectionals this weekend, however he credits a lot of the team’s success this year to their coach, Matt Robinson, who is returning for his second year as head Varsity coach.  The team had a record of 10-15, but this does not accurately show the team’s success this year, especially because of the incredible individual achievements they had this year.  Senior Taylor Treadgold is predicted to land at least 3rd place in state qualifiers this weekend, but hopes to place first and qualify for the state finals at the Times Union Center.
